Complainant Name:
Michael Ainsworth

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Independent

Michael Ainsworth complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an opinion piece which asserted, without proof, that Chelsea fans had applauded a man who allegedly directed a monkey impersonation towards a black football player. The complainant was concerned that readers would be misled in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy).

The newspaper accepted that the columnist could not be certain of the reaction of Chelsea supporters and the complaint was resolved when the newspaper removed the reference to fans applauding the gesture from the online article.
