Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Mr Christian Hunt, editor of Carbon Brief, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article reporting on the world's fossil fuel consumption, which was inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

Fossil fuel use

A comment piece entitled "Ignore the prophets of doom - this is a golden age for the world" (Aug 10) stated "the truth is that the world's fossil-fuel consumption is falling, mainly due to more efficient cars and factories". This should have referred to the "rich world", ie countries that are members of the OECD. The economic growth of poorer countries means that global fossil fuel consumption is increasing.
