Complainant Name:
Mr Jonathan Apps & Ms Tina Hallett

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Mr Jonathan Apps and Ms Tina Hallett complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainants considered that the newspaper had incorrectly reported that a complaint about the chimes of a church clock had been about the church bells. They also said that it wrongly reported that the chimes could not be set on a timer.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification as a footnote to the online article:

We have been asked to point out that the complaint concerned the chiming of the village church clock and not the ringing of the church bells. Since our report was published, a way has been found of silencing the clock at night, while allowing it to continue chiming during the day.
