A woman complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an inquest report had contained excessive detail about her husband's suicide, in breach of Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following apology:

‘APOLOGY: Relating to a report entitled ‘Inquest hears of man's suicide' published in the Whitby Gazette on Friday 14 December 2012. We wish to express regret for the upset caused to family and friends following the publication of details from the inquest hearing. While we have a duty to report on such matters, we conceded that some of the facts were excessive for which we apologise'.
