Complainant Name:
Peter Howard

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Times

Complaint:

Peter Howard complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had incorrectly reported the figures for the percentage of UK trade with the USA compared with that which the country has with the rest of the EU.

Resolution:

The newspaper thanked the complainant for pointing out the error and accepted that greater care should have been over the statistics. The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction in print and online:

"A focus article on the US fiscal cliff (Cliffhanger, News, Dec 30) stated wrongly that America accounts for 30% of UK trade and the EU 40%. The correct figures are 13% and 49% respectively."
