Complainant Name:
Dr Helen Hammond

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Dr Helen Hammond was one of ten individuals who complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant was concerned that the newspaper had taken a quotation from the BMJ out of context in such a way that wrongly suggested that disabled babies were being euthanised by the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP).

The complaint was resolved when newspaper removed the online article and the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification in print and online:

In common with other newspapers, an article on 29 November 2012 about the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) for terminally ill children included the account of a doctor, previously published in the BMJ, describing how it feels to withdraw feeding from new-born babies. We are happy to clarify that the doctor in question does not practice in the UK and that his account does not refer to the LCP.
