Complainant Name:
Mrs Jessica Whittaker

Clauses Noted: 1, 3, 5

Publication: Daily Mail

Mrs Jessica Whittaker complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article, published online only, which she considered had misleadingly suggested that her former partner had taken his own life after losing his job. The complainant was also concerned about the publication of her photograph, and considered that the article had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy), Clause 3 (Privacy) and Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complaint was resolved following the removal of the photograph, amendments to the article online, and the publication of the following footnote:

An earlier version of this article suggested that Mr Whittaker-Axon took his life as a result of being fired from his position at Finglands bus firm. We are happy to clarify that this was not the case and that there were other contributing factors.
