Ms Ruth Adams complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in her view, inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant is the owner of Smokey the cat, who is recognised by Guinness World Records as the loudest purring domestic cat. She said that, contrary to the impression given by the article, it was not the case that Smokey had lost her record to another feline.

The complaint was resolve when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

A previous version of this article stated that Merlin the cat had been confirmed as the Guinness World Record holder for the ‘loudest purr in the world'. We are happy to clarify that the current record is, in fact, held by a cat called Smokey from Pitsford, Northants.
