Ms Ruth Adams complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in her view, inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant is the owner of Smokey the cat, who is recognised by Guinness World Records as the loudest purring domestic cat. She said that, contrary to the impression given by the article, it was not the case that Smokey had lost her record to another feline.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

Our article, ‘Merlin is the cat that's got the scream...' (January 10) claimed that Merlin the cat from Torquay had been ‘officially named' by Guinness Worlds Records as ‘the loudest purrer on the planet'. We are happy to make clear that, in fact, the current record for the loudest purr is held by Ruth Adams, and her cat Smokey. Guinness World Records stipulates that readings taken as part of a record attempt must be measured from at least one metre away.
