Mr William Ross

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Mr William Ross complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in his view, inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The article reported that Celtic Football Club's debt had been ‘all but wiped out'; however, according to the complainant, the figures which the newspaper had referenced referred to the club's net bank debt, as opposed to its overall liabilities.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

In our article, ‘Debt-free Celts are so strong' (February 12) we reported that Celtic Football Club's debt has ‘almost been wiped out'. We are happy to make clear that the debt referred to was bank debt, rather than the club's entire debt.
