Mrs Melanie Taylor complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in her view, inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

While it was correct for the newspaper to have reported that ‘Synchronized and According to Pete were put down after the [2012 Grand] National', it was not the case that ‘a further four animals died during the three day meeting'.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

In our article of 14 February we stated that six horses died during the 2012 three day Aintree festival. In fact, it was a total of six horses at the eight days of racing which took place at Aintree in 2012.
