Complainant Name:
Mr Jon Cummins

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Mr Jon Cummins complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in his view, inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The article reported on the experiences of a theft victim, and its headline reported the victim's claim that ‘I caught the thief who ruined my little boy's big day - and the police just let him go'.

According to the complainant, however, the release of the criminal occurred because the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to pursue a case.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved after the newspaper amended the online article's headline, so that it stated ‘I caught the thief who ruined my little boy's big day - and the police just had to let him go'.
