Complainant Name:
Mr Robert Miller

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Gloucestershire Echo

Complaint:

Mr Robert Miller complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in his view, inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The article reported that ‘GE Aviation' had provided local schools with high visibility vests. The complainant said this was simply not the case: the vests had been provided by the Unite union.

Resolution:

The complainant had previously informed the newspaper of his concerns, with the result that it had published the following clarification which resolved the matter:

In a story in the Gloucestershire Echo on January 15, we reported that high visibility vests had been donated to three schools in Bishop's Cleeve by GE Aviation. In fact, the funding came from the Unite union, many of whose members work in the aviation industry locally. Membership funds from its branch, which has 600 members, were used to pay for the jackets. We apologise for the error.
