Complainant Name:
Mr Joe O'Brien

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mirror

Mr Joe O'Brien complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published inaccurate information in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that the newspaper had incorrectly claimed that his late brother was a former soldier. In fact, he had never been a member of the armed forces.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

Further to our article of 2 April 2013 "Lost Solider Found Dead in Van after Four Months" relying on information from an agency, we published in good faith an allegation that Paul O'Brien who was tragically found dead four months after he vanished, was a soldier who fought in the Gulf War and Northern Ireland. We have been informed that Mr O'Brien was never a member of the armed services. We are happy to set the record straight and regret any distress this caused to the family.
