Complainant Name:
Mr Joe O'Brien

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Mr Joe O'Brien complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published on its website inaccurate information in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that the newspaper had incorrectly claimed that his late brother was a former soldier. In fact, he had never been a member of the armed forces.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction on its website:

In our article of 1 April 2013 "Body of former solider, 42, lay in van parked at pub for FOUR MONTHS" we alleged that Paul O'Brien who was tragically found dead four months after he vanished, was a soldier who fought in the Gulf War and Northern Ireland. Mr O'Brien's family has asked us to clarify that he was never a member of the armed services. We regret any distress caused to Mr O'Brien's family.
