Complainant Name:
Mr & Mrs Philip Copestick

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Mr & Mrs Philip Copestick complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice that an article inaccurately reported allegations made against their son, who had since taken his own life.

The matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following statement:

In a story ‘Grope claim dad suicide' (23 March) we stated that Steven Copestick shot himself after being accused of ‘groping' two women. We would like to clarify that although the allegations were of a sexual nature, they were unspecified by police. We apologise to Mr Copestick's parents for any distress caused.
