Complainant Name:
Mr Joe O'Brien

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Mr Joe O'Brien complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published inaccurate information in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that the newspaper had incorrectly claimed that his late brother was a former soldier. In fact, he had never been a member of the armed forces.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

In the article ‘Van man grim find' (April 2) we described Paul O'Brien, who was tragically found dead four months after he vanished, as an ‘ex-soldier'. Mr O'Brien's family has asked us to clarify that he was never a member of the armed services. We are happy to set the record straight and regret any distress to his family.
