Complainant Name:
Gordon Brown

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Times

Complaint:

Mr Gordon Brown complained through the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown that the newspaper had published an inaccurate article on its website in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that the newspaper had failed to make clear that Mr Brown did not receive fees associated with speeches that he delivered; any such fees were paid directly to the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown to be spent on charitable and public service work. The newspaper had previously been made aware of the position on numerous occasions.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following statement:

The online version of Rod Liddle's column on May 19 stated that the United Arab Emirates "gave" Gordon Brown a fee of 62,000 for a lecture. This should have made clear, as we have reported in the past, that personally Mr Brown makes no gain nor receives such fees which go directly to the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown for charitable and public service work. We regret this omission.
