Complainant Name:
Miss Melissa Thomas

Clauses Noted: 1, 3

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Miss Melissa Thomas complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) and Clause 3 (Privacy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about an article which reported on a conviction for perverting the course of justice. The complainant expressed concern about a claim that she had created a social media page the defendant's name, using it to post herself "spiteful and abusive messages". The complainant denied that she had ever accepted setting up such a Facebook page, or that this had formed part of the charges against her. The complainant was also concerned that the newspaper had published a number of photographs from her social media page.

Resolution:

The matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal of several Facebook images, as well as the addition of the following statement to the online report:

We are happy to clarify that Ms Thomas has always denied the accusation that she admitted setting up an artificial Facebook page in Mr Parnell's name.
