Complainant Name:
Wonga

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Times

Complaint:

Wonga complained to the Press Complaints Commission through legal representatives about articles which claimed that the company was "considering moving abroad in an attempt to reduce its tax bill". The complainant also expressed concern about speculation as to the value of shares which had been passed to Wonga co-founder, Mr Errol Damelin. The complainant said that the articles were misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

Resolution:

The matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

On December 23 last year we published an article ("Wonga may quit UK to cut tax", News) in which we referred to the possibility of the company moving abroad. When approached before publication, the company said that it had no comment to make on the structure of its business. However, following publication, it said it was not planning to move domicile from the UK, for tax reasons or otherwise. We are happy to accept this assurance from Wonga.
