Dr Carol Uren complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about an article which claimed that a policy change by Greater Manchester Police would see attacks on transgender people categorised as hate crimes. The complainant said that transgender hate crime had long been recognised as such by GMP, as well as all other police authorities in the UK. Concern was also expressed about a suggestion that such offences would not be subject to harsher sentences unless the law changed.

The matter was resolved when the newspaper published the following statement in its corrections and clarifications column, as well as making appropriate amendments to the online article:

A report on hate crime attacks on Thursday said transgender people will be among new victim groups, following police policy changes. We are happy to clarify that the law already includes this group and, since December, harsher sentences may be imposed for offences.
