Complainant Name:
Hilary Buchanan

Clauses Noted: 5

Publication: Daily Record

Hilary Buchanan complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article reporting the funeral of her 13 year-old child which was accompanied by images that had been obtained at the service in a manner the complainant considered unsympathetic and insensitive in breach of Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock).

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal of the photographs of the complainant's daughter from the newspaper's archive; a donation to Children 1st, the charity of the complainant's choice; and the publication of the following apology:

On 23 February, as part of a report of the funeral of Holly Buchanan, we published a picture in good faith of Holly from the Order of Service, provided to us by an agency who attended the funeral. We would like to apologize to Holly's family for any upset caused by the publication.
