Complainant Name:
Ms Abigail Pollard

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: That's Life

Complaint:

Ms Abigail Pollard complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about an article which described the death of baby Ethan Hopson at the hands of Jason Redgrave, who had been babysitting him at the time. The complainant objected to a front page reference to Mr Redgrave as a "childminder".

Resolution:

The matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following letter from the complainant:

I was disappointed to see that Jason Redgrave - the man responsible for the tragic death of Karly Hopson's baby, Ethan - had been referred to as a ‘childminder' on the front page of your March 14 edition. Far from being a childminder - someone who is registered and inspected by OFSTED, and paid to care for children in their own home - it seemed that Mr Redgrave was simply babysitting for his then girlfriend. In describing him in this way, your article had the potential to unfairly damage the reputation of childminders in the UK.
