Ms Anna Morell

Clauses Noted: 1, 12

Publication: The Times

Ms Anna Morell complained to the Press Complaints Commission, under Clause 1 (Accuracy) and Clause 12 (Discrimination) of the Editors' Code of Practice, about a headline which she considered to have misleadingly omitted reference to British female champions at Wimbledon during the last 77 years.

The complaint was resolved after the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification, in print and online:

The headline to our front-page report on the Men's Singles final at Wimbledon (July 8) was "Murray ends 77-year wait for British Win". Since Fred Perry's 1936 victory in the men's competition, singles titles at Wimbledon have of course been won four times by British women, most recently Virginia Wade in 1977.
