Complainant Name:
Mike Linfoot

Clauses Noted: 1, 12

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Mike Linfoot complained to the Press Complaints Commission, via Travellers Movement, that the newspaper had published a report which contained a number of inaccuracies in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The article was published in advance of a woman's appearance in court over charges of racial abuse linked to a planning dispute. In particular, the complainant was concerned that his family's relationship with their local community had been misrepresented by the newspaper. The complainant also considered that the coverage contained a pejorative reference to his ethnicity in breach of Clause 12 (Discrimination).

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the amendment of the online article to include a detailed comment from the complainant setting out both the support his family had received from the local community and his explanation of the planning issues.
