Complainant Name:
Mr Chris Lane

Clauses Noted: 1, 12

Publication: The Independent

Mr Chris Lane complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which was, in his view, inaccurate and discriminatory in breach of Clauses 1 (Accuracy) and 12 (Discrimination) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant objected to the claim, attributed to a colleague of Mike Ashley, that the Newcastle United owner had been subjected to anti-Semitic chants from the club's supporters.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of a letter from the complainant, which was accompanied by the following statement:

Editor's Note: The Independent regrets any offence caused by the inclusion of a quote given to us - and published - in good faith.
