Complainant Name:
Mr John Somerville

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Mr John Somerville complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published inaccurate, misleading or distorted information in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that the newspaper's claim that "nearly half the electricity" made by wind farms was not needed was incorrect. This had stemmed from the fact that on one particular day, 46 per cent of energy from a wind farm had been constrained.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following wording:

An article on 10 August reported that nearly half the electricity produced by wind farms is being discarded. We are happy to clarify that this is the discard rate on particular days rather than an average figure.
