Complainant Name:
Mr Adam John Spears

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

Complaint:

Mr Adam John Spears complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published inaccurate information in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that an article incorrectly claimed that a court transcript recorded that he had admitted to Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) officers that he had used serving police contacts to search confidential criminal databases. He had admitted no such thing.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

On September 1 we reported that former detective inspector John Spears had admitted to Serious Organised Crime Agency officers that he had paid serving police contacts to search criminal records databases. We are happy to clarify he did not make such an admission and, indeed, had denied any such offence.
