Complainant Name:
Mrs Julia Litt

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

Complaint:

Mrs Julia Litt complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published a misleading image in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The newspaper had stated that the image was of terrorists threatening customers at a bank in the Westgate shopping mall in Kenya; it was, in fact, a photograph of a bank raid, which had taken place in Florida in 2010.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction in the newspaper and online:

"On September 29 we published an image apparently from CCTV of terrorists threatening bank customers at the Nairobi shopping mall. Another news organisation also published the same picture. Regrettably, the image was of a different incident. We apologise to readers."
