Complainant Name:
Mr Jordan Sheard

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Mr Jordan Sheard complained through his solicitors to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an inaccurate article in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant, who had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, said that the newspaper had incorrectly implied that he was found guilty of committing a "hate crime" by saying he had been "bullying [the deceased] for being gay". The Court specifically found that the offence of manslaughter to which the complaint pleaded guilty was not a "hate crime".

The complaint was resolved when the Commission negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

Further to our article "Just 21 mths jail for burning lad to death" (22 March) we are happy to make clear that the court found the offence of manslaughter to which Jordan Sheard pleaded guilty was not a hate crime.
