Complainant Name:
Mr Charles Piggott

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Herald (Glasgow)

Mr Charles Piggott complained to the Press Complaints Commission, under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice, about an article which he considered to have inaccurately suggested that medical experts believed that the gel used to deliver nicotine in electronic cigarettes could be as harmful as tobacco.

The complaint was resolved after the PCC negotiated the following correction:

"We reported on July 9 that some medical experts say that the gel used to deliver the nicotine in e-cigarettes could be as big a risk to people's health as tobacco. In fact, we are not aware of any experts who hold that view, and accept that the evidence on which this assertion was made did not justify its use, particularly taking account of the risks of cancer, heart disease and lung damage from real cigarettes."
