Mr Syed Raza complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which he considered to have been inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant said that, contrary to the claims in the article, it was not the case that Shia Muslims self-flagellated in order to demonstrate their ‘guilt' for not defending the Imam Hussein.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

An earlier version of this article, written from agency copy, was amended to remove the suggestion that Shias self-flagellate because of guilt for not defending Imam Hussein. Readers have pointed out that the procession serves as a commemoration and protest at his killing and does not imply they deserve any blame.
