Complainant Name:
Mr Liam Cooney

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: Herald Express (Torquay)

Mr Liam Cooney complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article on the death of his mother had inaccurately stated that she had been found in her flat on 30 April, her birthday. The complainant considered that this error and the positioning of the article above the lottery results had been insensitive and demonstrated a lack of consideration for the family.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated a private letter of apology and the publication of the following correction in print and online:

''Inquest adjourned

In the Herald Express of May 24, 2012, we reported the adjournment of an inquest into the death of Hettie Grant Cooney. In the report, it was incorrectly stated that Mrs Cooney had been found in her flat on April 30, 2012. In fact, she was found on May 11, 2012. We apologise for the error and for any distress this may have caused.''
