Complainant Name:
Councillor Iain Gaul

Clauses Noted: 1, 2

Publication: Courier & Advertiser (Dundee)

Councillor Iain Gaul complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article headlined "Row over taxpayer revamp of Angus pub" contained a number of inaccuracies in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant expressed concern that the article had wrongly attributed statements to him and other members of the CARS steering group. The newspaper had published a clarification, but the complainant did not consider that it had been given due prominence.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of a further correction and apology:

An article published on 29 October, headlined "Row over taxpayer revamp of Angus pub", incorrectly stated that a lobbying letter, written to the CARS steering group, had been written by council leader Iain Gaul and councillors Ronnie Proctor and Jeannette Gaul; in fact, it had been written by residents. We apologise for this error and are happy to clarify the matter.
