Clauses Noted: 1, 3, 5, 9

Publication: Manchester Evening News

A woman complained to the Press Complaints Commission that a newspaper had published information on its website in breach of Clauses 1 (Accuracy), 3 (Privacy), 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) and 9 (Reporting of Crime) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant was concerned that an article, which reported on her brother's criminal offence, to which she had no connection, had identified her by name as his sister. She was further concerned that the article had included an inaccurate address for her brother.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the alteration of the online article and the publication of the following apology:

An earlier version of this article made reference to Mr Lowcock's sister. We would like to apologise for the inclusion of her name and clarify she is not connected to his crime. We also incorrectly stated that Mr Lowcock lived at Burnside Close, Hopwood in 2011. In fact, he lived in Hawthorn Road, Bamford, Rochdale.
