Mr Jim Underhill complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article (published online only), which reported on forthcoming research into the health impact of electronic cigarettes, had inaccurately reported the study as if it had concluded, and its findings been published, in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.


The newspaper had removed the article on receipt of the complaint, and accepted the error. The complaint was resolved after the PCC negotiated the redrafting of the article to correctly reflect the status of the research and the publication of the following clarification to explain to readers the reason for the changes:

An earlier version of this article presented the conclusions of the US College of Dentistry study. In fact, the study is still ongoing and the findings have not yet been published. We are happy to clarify this.
