Miss Sandra Cross

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: The Scottish Sun

Miss Sandra Cross complained to the Press Complaints Commission on behalf of Ms Shiona Lachlan that the newspaper had published an inaccurate and intrusive article about the death of Ms Sadie Lachlan, in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) and Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal of the online article, a private letter of apology to the family, a donation to charity and the publication of the following correction:

"In an article ‘Gran dies on a sunbed' (17th June) about the sad death of Mrs Sadie Lachlan, several mistakes were made. Mrs Lachlan did not die from a heart condition. In fact the official cause of death was a brain aneurism. Her daughter Shiona is not pregnant, nor has she been and she is not a twin. We apologise to the family for the distress caused by our enquiries."
