Complainant Name:
The Rt Hon Lord Prescott

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

This complaint was originally made to the PCC. As the PCC closed on 8 September the complaint was resolved by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) under PCC procedures. IPSO is the new independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry.

The Rt Hon Lord Prescott complained to the Press Complaints Commission, under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice, that the newspaper had published an inaccurate allegation relating to his conduct.

The complaint was resolved after the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification and the removal of the online article:

An article on June 11 repeated a previously reported claim that 36 years ago, John Prescott, now Lord Prescott, ‘touched up' the wife of Labour MP Austin Mitchell by putting his hand up her skirt. Lord Prescott has asked us to make clear that he denies that this incident ever took place.
