Complainant Name:
Mr John Woodier

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: Middlesbrough Evening Gazette

Mr John Woodier complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which he considered to have been inaccurate and insensitive in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) and Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said it was not the case that his late son had a "heroin dependency".

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction and apology:

On April 3, the Evening Gazette carried a report of the inquest into the death of Liam Woodier. The report stated that Liam had a heroin dependency. This was not stated at the inquest. We accept this is not true and was a mistake in reporting by the Gazette. We would like to apologise to Mr Woodier's family and friends for our mistake.
