Complainant Name:
Mr Richard Duffy

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Express & Star (Stafford)

Mr Richard Duffy complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice in an article about Stafford Hospital. The complainant said that it was inaccurate to say that "hundreds of patients needlessly died amid appalling conditions and care" at the hospital.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the amendment of the online article so that the phrase under dispute read "It is believed that the national scandal at Stafford Hospital saw between 400-1200 avoidable deaths of patients between 2005 and 2009 although these figures are now disputed."
