Complainant Name:
Ms Jayne Larkin

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: News & Star (Carlisle)

Ms Jayne Lakin complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) and Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Editors' Code of Practice in an article reporting on the inquest into the death of her husband, Mr Mark Lakin. She said that she found the way in which the newspaper had reported the inquest's findings misleading and upsetting.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of an apology in the newspaper which read:

"The News & Star would like to apologise to the family of Carlisle dad Mark Lakin for distress caused by coverage of the inquest after his tragic death.

While the March 26 article was accurate, Mr Lakin's widow and family objected to the prominence given to the inquest and to its headline. It was never our intention to add to the family's grief. Mr Lakin's death was followed by an outpouring of public sympathy in the form of tributes and fundraising efforts from those who knew him. We wish to express our sympathy with his family and to apologise for the upset that our coverage caused."
