Complainant Name:
Ms Ruth Ouzia

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: Southern Daily Echo

This complaint was originally made to the PCC. As the PCC closed on 8 September the complaint was resolved by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) under PCC procedures. IPSO is the new independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry.

Ms Ruth Ouzia complained to the Press Complaints Commission, under Clause 1 (Accuracy) and Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) that the newspaper had published an inaccurate account of the inquest into the death of her father.

The complaint was resolved on the basis of a private letter of apology to the complainant's mother, and the publication of the following correction and apology:

In a report into the inquest into the death of Mr Ronald Hutchings of Holbury, when the cause of death at the hearing was given as epithelioid mesothelioma, it was reported that Mr Hutchings had worked on building sites when in fact he had worked for a builders merchant and was later employed as an assistant unit operator at Fawley Power Station for many years. It was also reported that a post mortem had taken place when none was carried out. We apologise for any distress this inaccuracy caused.
