Complainant Name:
Mr Adam Wagner

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

This complaint was originally made to the PCC. As the PCC closed on 8 September the complaint was resolved by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) under PCC procedures. IPSO is the new independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry.

Mr Adam Wagner complained to the Press Complaints Commission, under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice, that the newspaper had published inaccurate claims concerning decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.

The complaint was resolved on the basis of the publication of the following correction:

An article ‘Take Back our Right to Govern' (27 July) reported that the European Court of Human Rights had stopped a British judge imposing a whole life tariff on murderer Ian McLoughlin. In fact, that judge's decision was overturned by the Court of Appeal, which imposed a whole life tariff on Mr McLoughlin and ruled that the European Convention had not prevented the judge from doing so. In addition, we would like to make clear that the figure of £5,496, which we said was awarded to Rupert Massey by Human Rights judges, included legal costs as well as compensation.
