Complainant Name:
Mr Edward Watt

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Scotsman

Mr Edward Watt complained to the Press Complaints Commission, under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice, that the newspaper had published an inaccurate account of his acquittal for rape, in stating that the trial judge at the High Court "appeared to accept the alleged victim's claims that she had at some point said no". In fact, no such finding was made; in his judicial remarks, the trial judge, Lord Abernethy, stated: "I am concerned whether there was merely evidence led that the complainer did not consent, not whether that evidence is to be accepted".

The complaint was resolved after the PCC negotiated the removal of the article from The Scotsman's website.
