Complainant Name:
Miss Zoe Lee

Clauses Noted: 1, 12

Publication: The Sun on Sunday

Complaint:

This complaint was originally made to the PCC. As the PCC closed on 8 September the complaint was resolved by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) under PCC procedures. IPSO is the new independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry.

Miss Zoe Lee complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had breached Clause 1(Accuracy) and Clause 12 (Discrimination) of the Editors' Code of Practice, in articles reporting that a local man had killed his wife and taken his own life.

Resolution:

The complaints were resolved when the newspaper wrote a personal letter to the complainant and published the following correction in print:

In an article headlined "Gypsy Agony Suicide" (August 14) we reported comments from neighbours that a planning application from a family of travellers caused John Knott to take his own life and that of his wife. We would like to make clear that Mr Knott was also struggling with his wife's terminal illness and this was likely to have been a major contributing factor to his actions. Further, the application was for one family rather than two. We are sorry for the misunderstanding.
