Glasgow Open Day 7 November 2006
November saw the PCC take to the road again, visiting Glasgow for the latest in its successful series of public Open Days. Held at the City Halls in Glasgow’s Merchant’s Quarter, some 85 members of the public came along to meet PCC Commission members and staff to find out more about the workings of both the PCC and the UK press industry. The event began with an informal surgery session, where members of the public quizzed members of PCC staff about a variety of matters related to complaints about newspapers and magazines. Over tea and coffee, small groups and one-to-one discussions ranged from the intricacies of the complaints process and the set-up of the PCC, to the reporting of minority and religious groups, and the system of self-regulation overseen by the PCC. This session was designed to give people the chance to speak to members of staff in private and voice any concerns they might have. This was followed by a public Question and Answer session, with a panel consisting of PCC Chairman, Sir Christopher Meyer, editor of The Herald, Charles McGhee, PCC Director, Tim Toulmin, and public member of the Commission, Vivien Hepworth. The session lasted for an hour and a half and covered issues such as the powers and sanctions available to the PCC, the potential impact on newspapers of the rise of citizen journalism, the prominence in newspapers and magazines of corrections and apologies negotiated by the PCC, and the degree of independence in the composition of the Commission. Attendees came from such a wide range of backgrounds, including representatives from Oxfam, the Office of Muslim Affairs, the Scottish Interfaith Council, the Scottish Council for Jewish Communities, LGBT Youth Scotland and the UK Hepatitis C Resource Centre, as well as a number of Media Studies students and members of the public. The PCC has held two Open Days a year in cities across the UK since 2003. They have been held in Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Newcastle, Liverpool and now Glasgow. In 2007, it is planned that they will be in Birmingham and Leeds – details will be posted on this website in due course. For further information about Open Days in the meantime, please contact the PCC’s Information and Events Manager, Tonia Milton, on tonia.milton@pcc.org.uk or 020 7831 0022.
