Complaint:
Ms Jean Candler, Senior Press Officer of the Refugee Council, complained that an article on a centre for failed asylum seekers was inaccurate and discriminatory when it referred to its inhabitants as “bogus asylum seekers” and “bogus refugees”.

Resolution:
The complaint was resolved when the newspaper sent an internal memorandum to its staff, re-emphasising the PCC guidance note on refugees and asylum seekers and drawing attention to the potential dangers of using the sometimes pejorative term “bogus” in relation to asylum seekers generally.
