Complainant Name: Clauses Noted: 1, 3, 10 Publication: The Mail on Sunday Complaint: Mr Robert Sharpe, Chief Executive of Portman Building Society,
complained that a profile on him – based on an interview he had given to the
newspaper – contained inaccuracies. The complainant also stated that the
newspaper had originally given an assurance that his private life would not
feature in the piece and was therefore concerned that the resulting article,
which did mention his private life, intruded into his privacy.
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper –
which denied that it had given such an assurance and did not accept that it had
breached Clause 3 (Privacy) – published the following correction and apology:
“On May 28, in an article on Robert Sharpe,
chief executive of Portman Building Society, we incorrectly reported that there
have been many more headlines about Mr Sharpe's private life than about
Portman's commercial success since he has been at the society's helm, for which
we are happy to apologise”.
