Lembit Opik MP complained that a columnist had repeated an inaccuracy (about which he had previously complained) regarding the break up of his former relationship: it was his former fiancée who had broken off their engagement, for reasons unrelated to his current relationship.

The newspaper apologised to the complainant for the oversight which had come about from a system failure. The newspaper issued a further legal warning, marked its records, issued serious warnings to those responsible, published an apology in the following week’s column and made a donation to the Newtown Family Crisis Centre. The complaint was resolved on that basis.
