Complainant Name:
Mark Chapman

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Express

Complaint:

Mark Chapman, a Community Support Worker for Sight Concern, complained that the newspaper had inaccurately stated that macular degeneration "worsens over time to cause total blindness", when this outcome was in fact very rare for sufferers. He was concerned that this had the potential to cause needless distress amongst those who had been diagnosed with the disease.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published a letter from the complainant in which he stressed that macular degeneration only leads to total blindness in rare cases and gave contact details for organisations that could provide advice and support for sufferers.
